The daycare of Ukrainians in Meppel will be expanded again. There will be 55 extra places available, so there is now room for 600 Ukrainian refugees.

Since 2022, refugees from Ukraine have been taken care of in the former hospital in Meppel. At the end of last year, the Lenferink Group bought that building, but the municipality made an appointment so that refugees are being taken care of for three years.

The NOS Reports today that municipalities are sounding the alarm about the housing of Ukrainians. Reception centers are full and refugees are regularly refused. The Association of Dutch Municipalities (VNG) speaks of a “very critical situation” and calls on the government to take action. The Netherlands currently has more than 97,000 municipal reception places and they are “almost” all occupied, writes the NOS.

That there is now extra space in Meppel is because an extra wing of the old hospital has been released, in combination with a reclassification of different spaces in the building. “In Drenthe we do not yet meet the assignment as done in the context of the Spreading Act. That is why we will create 55 extra places within the current reception location,” writes the municipality of Meppel.
