Drenthe is a national monument richer. The Cultural Heritage Rijksdienst has the artwork today Broken Circle/Spiral Hill In Emmen included in a list of nationally protected heritage. In the list, the Post 65are buildings and monuments that reflect the economic, cultural and social growth of the Netherlands between 1965 and 1990.

After the destruction of the Second World War, the Netherlands had to reinvent itself. The natural gas revenues offered the chance to build a welfare state and the economy grew rapidly. This led to a wave of innovations in architecture and urban design. Everywhere their sleeves were raised and construction workers worked an accident: The Sky wax The Limit.

Broken Circle/Spiral Hill Comes from the tube of the American artist Robert Smithson. He designed it country-art-artwork between 1971 and 1972 in the sand excavation at the Emmerschans district. The artwork consists of two parts: a dike that is laid in the water and a excavation on the land side. There is a boulder from the ice age in the middle of the headland.

Smithson wanted to Broken Circle/Spiral Hill Show the impact of human interventions on the landscape. The sand excavation was created for sand extraction, which was needed for the construction of the many new construction projects after the war. For example, the artwork symbolizes Dutch growth between 1965 and 1990.
