Vacation should relax – but some cities put travelers under stress. A current analysis shows which metropolises have a particularly stressful effect and where relaxation is still possible.
Japanese metropolises: between fascination and overwhelming
With his unique culture and technology, Japan attracts many tourists. But the country’s largest cities can overwhelm. According to an analysis of Radical Storage, which evaluated over 97,000 reviews from the 100 most visited cities worldwide, Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto are the most stressful travel destinations. In Tokyo, 25.2 percent of the ratings contained information on stress, 21.6 percent in Osaka and 21.5 percent in Kyoto. The main cause is the enormous crowd, which is particularly noticeable in places such as the Shibuya crossing in Tokyo or the Nishiki market in Kyoto. Some visitors describe their experiences as overwhelming or even “excruciating”.
More stressful cities worldwide
In addition to the Japanese metropolises, other cities can also be found in the ranking of the most stressful travel destinations. London took fourth place with 17.7 percent stress -related reviews. Tourists report crowded sights such as the British Museum or the Borough Market, where they felt “crushed”. Shanghai (16.7 percent) and Beijing (16.6 percent) follow in the next places. Here, too, it is above all the crowds and the hectic city life that strain travelers.
In Shanghai, one of the most populous cities in China, in addition to the crowds, dense traffic and high air pollution contribute to the stress. Beijing, known for its historical sights such as the forbidden city and the sky stamp, attracts thousands of visitors every day, which leads to overcrowded attractions and long waiting times.
Phuket in Thailand, in seventh place with 15.6 percent stress -related reviews, suffers from mass tourism, especially in the high season. The beaches and tourist hotspots are often overcrowded, which affects the hoped -for relaxation. New York City (15.4 percent), Prague (15.2 percent) and Paris (14.9 percent) complete the top 10 most stressful travel destinations. In New York, constant noise, dense traffic and the overcrowded sights such as Times Square lead to stress among visitors. Prague and Paris, both known for their cultural treasures, are faced with an enormous number of visitor rank, which overcrowded the attractions and contains the infrastructure.
Relaxation locations: where the vacation is really relaxing
But there are also cities that are considered particularly relaxing. Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, leads the list of stress -free travel destinations. Only 1.6 percent of the reviews contained indications of stress. Visitors praise the quiet atmosphere and the well -preserved medieval old town. Cities like Vilnius in Lithuania, Thessaloniki in Greece and Stockholm in Sweden are also one of the top 10 of the most relaxed cities worldwide. These cities are characterized by a lower population density, fewer tourists and a relaxed atmosphere that enable travelers to relax and enjoy the surroundings in peace.
The analysis shows that the main cause of stress on vacation is overcrowding. Terms such as “crowds”, “overcrowded” and “overwhelming” were the most common stress indicators in the ratings. The increasing mass tourism means that even culturally rich cities become a burden for many travelers.
