The more than 800,000 pears of fruit grower Siem Entius in Nieuwe-Niedorp are ripe. “I can pick pears very quickly, but I can’t do it alone.” Siem already has some staff walking, but he is also looking for a special kind of pickers: pension beneficiaries.
Siem: “Usually they have more time, outside of tennis and the babysitter on the grandchildren. But it’s only for ten days, so they might just put that aside if they feel like picking.”
“Nice outside, delicious”
One of those men who has been retired for a long time and still gets up early is Willem Kwakernaat. “Make sure you have waterproof shoes!” He shouts laughing. The high grass between the pear trees is wet, especially in the morning. But it is especially the pleasure that drives him. “Nice outside, delicious. I am not used to picking, but it is just fun to do. Sitting still is not in my dictionary.”
