The 0-2 defeat in the first Hamburg Bundesliga derby has been very painful for HSV for 14 years-and whether the course of the game was bitter. FC St. Pauli, on the other hand, was able to celebrate, especially since coach Alexander Blessin gave his players the party permit.

By Florian Neuhauss

It was supposed to be the big party. With 50,000 own fans in the back, the HSV wanted to celebrate the first victory in the first division since May 12, 2018 in the first home game after the Bundesliga promotion – and also put the city rivals into its place.

It was then celebrated on Friday evening in the Volksparkstadion, but not by the home side, but by FC St. Pauli – after the deserved 2: 0 (1: 0) in the 112nd Hamburg derby. “The evening is shit when it comes to the end result,” HSV coach Merlin Polzin then did not take a leaf out of his mouth. “We don’t have to say that. It is very bitter and very disappointing.”

St. Pauli's players cheer a goal

Overall, the Kiezkickers earned through. However, the HSV was close to ensuring a turn in the neighborhood duel.

HSV continues to wait for his first goal

After the 0: 0 at the start in Gladbach, Polzin had promised significantly more offensive power of his team – but apparently the calculation without the strong defensive of the city rival. Like the Gladbacher, the St. Paulians (from the game) hardly allowed anything.

Hamburg's Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer

HSV striker Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer struggles with the derby.

It was no roughly stated center forward Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer that his team had been missing the necessary punch in the first Hamburg Bundesliga derby since 2011. The only positive news is probably that the long-injured offensive forces Yussuf Poulsen and Jean-Luc Dompé could collect further minutes of the game. The fact that the HSV has to compete with Bayern (September 13th) after the international break reduces the hope of a quick mood.

St. Pauli “really good”, but …

With the St. Paulians, who could also look forward to the lead in the table, on the other hand, the start of the season is more than successful. After the intoxicating final phase in the 3: 3 against Dortmund at the start, the derby victory. There is no more.

That was a good start, but nothing more.

Coach Alexander Blessin from FC St. Pauli

“It was really good,” said coach Blessin after his first derby against HSV to add: “That was a good start, but not more. We stay on the carpet and still have a lot to work.”

However, he allowed his players before the nine days of break, sometimes really letting the sow out, enjoying the success at HSV and celebrating properly. “You deserve that.”

“Extremely valuable” stamp for Hamburg election

It was a very special evening for the native of Hamburg Hauke Wahl. In his first season with St. Pauli, the Bundesliga promotion worked in 2024, but only one point in the two duels with HSV.

“It is important to have such a stamp ‘Derby winner’,” said Wahl. “This is what you want to have as a hamburger. I will certainly live in Hamburg after my career. And when you see me, you know: I am a derby winner. It’s extremely valuable for me.”

Blessin surprised by your own team

Only once had the choice and his defense colleagues looked really bad. The 31-year-old only saw the taillights of Königsdörffer after a long ball and could no longer prevent the impact in the goal of Nikola Vasilj. Only the video assistant let the guests breathe a sigh of relief. The hit in the 48th minute did not count due to a narrow offside position.

They would have been lucky there, stated in the Blessin and election in unison. Who knows if the game would be over if the HSV had really shot 1: 1 at the beginning of the second half of the game.

But afterwards everyone spoke not only about the good defensive, but also the high-play offensive, which, despite a complete new line-up in summer, is very popular. “There is a preparation for that,” said Blessin, but showed himself surprised: “Usually it doesn’t go so quickly. We are on the right track.”

Polzin has to “let the defeat sink” first “

The HSV still has to find it. Even if his team was “really well in both in the first half and the second” actually “, as Polzin said. His team was “energetic”. Now it is all the more important to stand together.

It doesn’t feel good now. It is of course disappointing that we did not make it – and stand in the table behind St. Pauli.

HSV coach Merlin Polzin

“It is about arriving in the Bundesliga and defending yourself by all the means you have to pass,” emphasized the 34-year-old, who spoke of a development process.

Even if he has to “let the derby defeat sink”, Polzin is still optimistic. The HSV will achieve its goals – “through hard work”. In any case, your own big Bundesliga game should only be postponed.
