Neil Young and the Chrome Hearts played on Wednesday evening at Huntington Bank Pavilion in Chicago. Towards the end of the head, they presented a brand new song: “Big Crime”. An angry billing with Donald Trump and his control over Washington, DC
“Big Crime” and Young’s open Trump criticism
“No fascist rules,” sings Young. “No fascist school/no soldiers on our streets/There is a big crime in DC in the White House … No more money for the fascists, the billionaire fascists. It is time to paralyze the system.”
A complete video of the appearance is not yet on YouTube, but Young published a sound check version including texts in the “Neil Young Archives”. “Big Crime” is the only piece of the evening that Trump mentioned directly. But more songs such as “Be the Rain”, “Southern Man”, “Ohio” and “Sun Green” made it clear where Young is politically.
Young had already expressed concerns at the beginning of the year that he was no longer allowed to return to the United States after his European tour because of his open criticism of Trump’s immigration policy. “When I talk about Donald J. Trump, I could be among those who are locked out to America when they return or put into prison,” he wrote. “That happens all the time now.”
Dispute over Swift, Springsteen and Fema
A few weeks later, Young reacted to Trump’s attacks against Taylor Swift and Bruce Springsteen: “Bruce and thousands of musicians think that they ruin America. Better to worry about the dying children in Gaza. They have decommissioned Fema when we needed the most urgent. Taylor Swift is right. Bruce too. You know how I feel.”
Ironically, Trump has been a Neil-Young fan for decades. Already in 2008 he told the Rolling Stone: “He has something very special. I heard his music for years. His voice is perfect and urgent. I met him several times – a great guy.”
Tour final at Farm AID
Young Tour continues in Milwaukee on Friday and ends on September 20 at the 40th anniversary of Farm Aid in Minneapolis. There he performs together with Kenny Chesney, Dave Matthews, Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp and Steve Earle.
The Lyrics of “Big Crime”:
No More Great Again
No – No more Great Again
There’s big crime in DC at the white house
Don’t need no fascist rules
Don’t want no fascist school
Don’t Want Soldiers on our streets
There’s big crime in DC at the white house
There’s big crime in DC at the white house
Got to get the fascists out
got to clean the white house out
Don’t Want Soldiers on our streets
There’s big crime in DC at the white house
There’s big crime in DC at the white house
No More Great Again
No – No more Great Again
There’s big crime in DC at the white house
There’s big crime in DC at the white house
No more money to the fascists
The Billionaire Fascists
Time to blackout the system
No More Great Again
No – No more Great Again
Time to blackout the system
There’s big crime in DC at the white house
There’s big crime in DC at the white house
No More Great Again
No no more great again
There’s big crime in DC at the white house
There’s big crime in DC at the white house
No More Great Again
No no more great again
