On the first single of her fourth album, “Lawn”, Hannah Sian Topp aka Aldous Harding plays a trick on us: With an almost childlike voice she sings a humming song that seems to have something French about it – so much lightness! After two dark albums this was a surprise. Elsewhere on “Warm Chris” the New Zealander also varies her voice and songwriting, for example on the dancing Latin American “Passion Babe”, the solemn piano miniature “She’ll Be Coming Round The Mountain” or the theatrical “Leathery Whip”.
Harding consistently explores different ideas without losing her quirky perspective on music
In her most recent work, Harding mastered her version of late sixties and early seventies folk with producer John Parish (here again), surrounding herself with an aura like Nico and phrasing like Nick Drake. Perhaps the theme of this repertoire is exploring new possibilities, at least not doing the same thing over and over again. Again, “Warm Chris” is a very good album because Harding consistently explores different ideas while not losing her quirky perspective on the music.
