Astrid Holleeder surprised the whole of the Netherlands this week by announcing that she will return to the public after almost ten years. Not only does she want to work again as a lawyer, she also joins the new program RTL Tonight as a legal clarity.
With that, the woman chooses who lived for years under the heaviest threat to return to publicity. She does this by consciously entering the spotlight, despite the risks.
A heavy decade
Since her testimony in 2015 everything changed: Astrid lived isolated. She lived in hiding for years, without social contacts, without normal trips with her daughter Miljuschka. “I am inside by my brother, but I can’t go outside by the government,” she told us earlier.
The threat was always present. Miljuschka was also told that she was in serious danger and has since been lived under heavy security. In her books, Astrid described how she even crawled under cars to check if there was no bomb. A normal life seemed unreachable.

Yet Astrid now makes a different choice. She wants to participate again in society, resume her work as a lawyer and show herself on television. That remains a brave step. This is because the judiciary still takes into account that revenge actions from her brother could follow
Astrid himself feels stronger: “My most important safety was my anonymity for years. But the contrast with now is great. I am grateful that I finally have protection. I can’t wait to participate in life again.”
Life in fear
The threat has not disappeared. In the past there were even indications that Willem Holleeder made plans from the EBI for an attack on his sister. “Everyone thinks: he has lifelong, so it’s done. But for us it’s just going on,” she said earlier. Yet Astrid consciously chooses to no longer be completely locked up by fear.

Dapper or too risky?
After years of silence and isolation, Astrid Holleeder chooses to step into public again. It is a decision that entails risks, but also radiates hope and courage: the wish, despite everything, to build a normal life again.
