A primary school and a special education school in Deurne will stay closed all day as a result of the fire at waste processing company Attero. It is about primary school De Piramide and SBO de Brigantijn. Both are in a multifunctional building near the waste processing company.

“It saw black of smoke here this morning,” says Ine van Dijk, teacher of SBO de Brigantijn, the school for special education. “There was a strong smoke scent inside. The director immediately called the fire brigade this morning and she advised to completely close the building today.”

In the two schools together there are more than one hundred and seventy students in total. Three teachers are present in the building to cope with children who come on Wednesday morning. “There are children who have not received the message,” says Van Dijk. “Some come from further away, by taxi. They are now going home again.”

According to Van Dijk, the smoke has been pulled away somewhat in the course of the morning, just like the scent in the building.

The fire started on Wednesday morning in a shed where compost would be. A large plume of smoke can still be seen in the area around nine o’clock. It is still unclear how the fire started.
