People in Germany keep their money together. The consumption mood has deteriorated for the third time in a row, as can be seen from the current survey of the consumer climate of the market research institute GfK and the Nuremberg Institute for Market Cutings (NIM).
The consumer climate indicator created for September has therefore fallen by 1.9 points to minus 23.6 points and thus to the lowest value since April. Analyst: On the inside, an average value of minus 21.5 points had previously expected.
As an essential reason for the renewed decline in the mood of consumer, consumer researchers cite the strongly sunken income expectations in view of increasing unemployment. “An increasing fear of loss of job ensures that many consumers remain careful with larger purchases,” said Nim expert Rolf Bürkl. The concern also contributes to energy, among other things, for energy.
Little hope for the economy
According to the survey, the economic expectations of consumers also cloud themselves. These slide to the lowest value for half a year. Consumers therefore apparently do not expect the German economy to recreate soon.
The survey period for the current analysis was from July 30th to August 11, 2025. The results are based on around 2,000 consumers every month: inner interviews on behalf of the EU Commission.
