David Gaudu secured victory in the third stage of the Vuelta after a strong final sprint.
The Frenchman of the Groupama-FDJ team had the most power reserves after 134.6 km and prevailed in front of the two Danes Mads Pedersen (Lidl Trek) and Jonas Vingegaard (Visma Lease A Bike). Topvorit Vingegaard kept the red jersey of the overall leader, which he had taken over the day before.
On Monday (25.8.2025) the field was close together until shortly before the finish, only when the climb to Ceres formed gaps. Pedersen initially seemed to be on a victory course, but Gaudu caught the Danes. Vingegaard rolled close behind the two over the finish line.
“This victory for the team and me – that’s the best start at the Vuelta at all”said Gaudu, for whom it was the third stage win in a vuelta: “I just stayed there on Pedersen, tried it in the last curve – and came by.”
Longest stage follows
The fourth stage of the Spain tour leads from Italy to France, it goes over 206.7 km from Susa to Voiron. It is the longest stage of this year’s Vuelta.
Spain only reaches the peloton on Wednesday when a 24.1 km long team time trial is on the program in Figueres.
The two-time Tour-de France winner Vingegaard has not yet won the Vuelta. His best result is the second overall place in 2023.
