In the Marsdijk district, the municipality of Assen has come across 34 illegal buildings. This may include a roof, a shed or garage, for which a permit should have been granted.

Last year and early this year, the municipality did a test to combat illegal buildings. The pilot was held in Marsdijk, where research was done into the extent of the problem.

With a digital tool, the municipality has mapped out and analyzed and analyzed extensions of existing building surfaces through aerial photos. Seven locations were investigated and a total of 212 buildings were examined. In 134 cases, the conclusion is that the situation is legal, in 34 cases it is certain that a structure is illegal. For the remaining 44 cases it is still unclear. In doing so, control is needed in the Drents Archief to see if a permit has been granted in the past.

With the results of this test, the municipality of Assen will get started with the development of a new working method and policy when it comes to illegal structures and usage functions. The municipality says that not all illegal buildings are taken. In principle, Assen has an enforcement policy with reactive supervision, which means that it will only be checked when a request for enforcement, complaint or report comes in.

The municipality does actively supervise certain topics such as illegal housing and fire -hazardous situations. Further research after the pilot project must show whether the municipality will adjust this way of checking.
