The Indonesian tennis player Janice Tjs caused the first big surprise at the US Open in New York.
The 23 -year -old qualifier defeated the number 24 on the seed list, Veronika Kudermetowa, 6: 4, 4: 6, 6: 4 on the first day of the tournament and entered the second round.
Tj is the first player from Indonesia since Angelique Widjaja in 2004 who competes in a Grand Slam in the individual main field-and at the same time the first to have won a match since then.
Kudermetowa compensates in the second set – and yet is without an opportunity
The world ranking 149. Jakarta started confidently, took Kudermetowa twice in the first set and secured the passage 6: 4. In the second sentence, the favorite Russian equalized, but Tj stayed calm and struck again in the decisive round. She used an early break, defended the lead and finally served zero.
In the second round, Tjen meets Emma Raducanu from Great Britain. The US Open winner from 2021 won her opening match against Ena Shibahara (Japan) 6: 1, 6: 2.
