Thanks to Darja Varfolomeev, the German team also got the next gold medal at the World Cup of rhythmic sports gymnastics in Rio de Janeiro.
One day after the triumph of the Olympic champion of Paris in the individual all-around, Germany secured victory in the team classification, which is formed across discipline from the individual and group results.
Above all, the results of Varfolomeev and Anastasia Simakova, which had finished sixth in the single all-around, helped the German team to gold.
The German group ended up in eighth place in the all-around final in the victory of the Japanese women. With the hand equipment, the group had narrowly missed moving into the finals.
“The crowning end of our season”
“We are pleased that we were able to call up our performance, and the gold medal is of course the crowning glory of our season,” said group member Melanie Dargel: “Unfortunately, it was not enough for the device finals, but we are glad that we still did our best and are very happy about gold.”
The focus is on 18-year-old Varfolomeev again on Sunday: Germany’s athlete of the year now has the chance to successfully defend four more World Cup titles in Rio. In Valencia, in 2023 she also won gold in the individual finals with the ball, the clubs, the band and the tire, on Sunday she now starts again as a top favorite in the respective final.
