Åskaag became an athlete at the age of 14. Before that, he had mainly had hobbies.
-At the age of 15, I first saw a Swedish match. I thought that Wau, that’s a handsome event. I never thought I’d compete in a national match against Finland, Åskog describes.
It soon became clear that this was a really tough talent. In 2021, he won gold in the Junior World Championships and European Championships in the long jump and triple jump. Two years later, the Espoo U23 European Championships became two silver.
– Right now I value the leap higher. It’s a little closer to my heart. The absolute emphasis on my training is on the triple jump. Long jump is a bonus, but I love it, of course.
In the Tokyo World Cup, the woman competes in both sports.
– There are a couple of rest days between the races. Long jump gives a lot of triple.
The record in the long jump is 675 centimeters and in the triple jump 14.27 meters.
– I want a medal for the value races. Let’s start with the European Championships next year. And then to the finals in the global races. The leap from juniors to the general series is big, but I’m only 22 years old and my big goals are 2028-32.
A woman in Eskilstuna moved to Stockholm in January. He works part-time at FlowLife, which sells recovery products.
-I work at 20 % working time, a day a week. The work is very light, but I like to work. It gives a nice balance for sports.
In Sweden, it is not very unusual for Åskaag-like athletes to work part-time.
