The participants swam today from the Frisian Stavoren, over the IJsselmeer to Medemblik. The goal of Swim4Brains was to raise as much money as possible for the Brain Foundation. The organization aimed at 110,000 euros. Shortly after the race, the counter was even 30,000 euros higher.

Organizer Sander Pluijm hears the news excited if he is dry again after 10 hours of swimming. “With that we can at least help integrate ten young people with a brain disorder into working life.”

Almost everyone across the street

According to the organization, there were fifty swimmers and 19 coaches who carry on sailing boats with the participants. Apart from four swimmers, everyone got the other side. Some bridged the full distance, others swam in a relay.

Dozens of family members and friends encouraged the participants at the finish in Medemblik. According to Sjaak Romijn, the proud father of participant Edwin, it is mainly important to hold a sausage for the swimmers. Or rather: a bitter garnish.

“Come on Ed,” he encourages his son during the last 100 meters. “There is a bowl of bitterballen ready for you!”

An earlier version of this article stated that all 69 participants have reached the other side. That’s not right.
