National strike Israel in protest against War Gaza expansion: protesters block highways

Israelis who consider the war and the families of the hostages are organizing a national strike on Sunday to protest against the expansion of the war in Gaza. According to the organizers, these protests appeal to the Israeli government to conclude a comprehensive agreement for the release of all fifty remaining hostages.

Reut Law Endri, the mother of Ido Edri who was murdered on 7 October 2023 during the Nova music festival, called on all Israeli citizens to take action “to save lives”. The strike is supported by thousands of companies, local authorities and some trade unions, and it is expected that the hostage square will attract one million visitors in Tel Aviv.

On first images from Israel you can see how important highways are blocked. The so -called Route 1 from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem is one of the blocked highways. This is therefore closed to traffic in both directions. Blocking highways has been a commonly used tactic of protesters in recent years.

Naomi Abir, mother of Lotan who was also killed at the NOVA festival, demands that the Israeli government will put a proposal on the table on Sunday for a comprehensive agreement to end the war in exchange for the release of the last hostage. According to Lishay Miran Lavi, whose husband Omri is being held in Gaza, this is only the start of the battle. “We have no other choice,” she says.
