The Palenstein district gets a striking work of art. From the autumn there is a huge coffee pot on a pedestal near the bridge on the Ambachtenpad, with a bench underneath. Residents will soon be able to chat, relax or drink a cup of coffee.

What kind of warmth, cosiness and being together does it say? Exactly, coffee! Palenstein’s columnas the new artwork is called, residents will soon have to bring together and ensure a piece of color in the neighborhood.

The designer, artist QS Serafijn, died in June 2024 and was originally from Brabant. According to his partner Anneloes van der Leun, he was a real coffee drinker. “The everyday coffee drinking was his source of inspiration for the artwork. In the hospital and Hospice he continued to work on his design.” Architect Jan-Willem Terlouw picked up the work after his death. “Unfortunately he was no longer there when Jan-Willem and I were told that his work will have a place in Zoetermeer,” says Anneloes.

The artist also used the number One More Cup of Coffee from Bob Dylan as inspiration. “The top of the artwork is actually an Italian percolator with eight sides. Those sides continue in the wooden base on which the percolator stands. The sentence One more cup of coffee for the road From the lyrics are on those eight sides, “says Anneloes.

With the spout to the village

The artwork will soon be a recognizable point in the neighborhood where people can meet. The slope under the bench will end diagonally, so that children can also sit on the ground. The column will soon be five meters high, with the spout points to the old village. In addition, it will be shown from the new Stadsplein because of the height.

‘He had found it fantastic’

Palenstein’s column Is now in the making and probably moves to his new place in Zoetermeer at the end of October. The festive unveiling is planned for November. “It is very special that we posthumously reveal his artwork. It is a final tribute and a piece of him lives through. He had found it fantastic.”
