Vincent Kompany has been a coach of FC Bayern for a year. In 2022 he could have hired with another Bundesliga association. But he had already decided differently.
Borussia Mönchengladbach would have presented almost Vincent Kompany as head coach in the 2022/23 season. This was revealed by Roland Virkus in the Sky documentary “Mythos Borussia: A legend will be 125”, which will be broadcast from August 29th.
Accordingly, the Gladbach sports director initially tried intensively for returning an ex-coach of the “foal”. “Actually, we wanted to get Lucien Favre back and were already far in the conversations,” said Virkus, who then revealed: “My plan B after Favre was Vincent Kompany.”
He had met three times with the Belgian and spoke about football with it for three hours. “An absolute specialist,” said the 58-year-old about the former central defender. The consequence: “When Favre canceled, I immediately called Vincent Kompany and said: Vinc, now the time has come, we can.”
But Virkus was late. Kompany explained to him that he had already promised him, but he had already promised Burnley FC. “And then I stood there without a trainer,” Virkus summarized the situation together.
As a result, Daniel Farke took over the club, who was looking for a new coach after the departure of Adi Hütter. But the collaboration with Farke ended after only one season and tenth in the Bundesliga. In the summer of 2023, Gerardo Seoane took over the team. Company switched to FC Bayern Munich a year later.
Despite the missed change, Kompany and Virkus continue to maintain a good relationship. In the Sky documentary you can see how both hug the 1-0 win of Bayern in the Borussia Park last season. Company says: “Thanks again. I know that at that moment you showed me your trust.” Virkus replied: “No problem, everything is fine. I am pleased that you took this development. This is much more important. Everything else doesn’t matter.”
Accordingly, Virkus cannot understand the criticism of Max Eberl, who brought Kompany to Munich – on the contrary. “When I heard that, I said: Max, top decision,” emphasized the Gladbach manager with regard to the company obligation. The ex-HSV professional is a growing trainer with his own ideas. They also fit well with Borussia Mönchengladbach, says Virkus.
