Shops closed and pressed on roads during day off in a large part of Europe: here it is certain

Attention for our countrymen abroad! Large parts of Europe today enjoy a day off because of Maria-Hemelvaart. That is why many stores are closed throughout Europe and it is busy on the road. Also on Saturday and Sunday a lot of traffic jams are expected due to recurring holiday traffic. Saturday promises to be the busiest day, the ANWB reports.
The holiday is a fixed shot on the calendar of Catholic and Orthodox Europe. Many stores will be closed in Belgium, France, Spain, Austria, Italy, Germany (especially in Bavaria and Saarland) and Portugal. But Maria-Hemelvaart is also celebrated in Greece, Poland and Croatia, stores are also most likely closed there. On this day, Christians commemorate that Mary, the mother of Jesus, has been absorbed in heaven with body and soul.

The Netherlands

In our country it will be busy on the road in the coming days. This bustle is mainly caused by roadworks, events and border controls. Parts of the A5, A10, A12 and A27 are closed. It is expected that it will also be busy when the Lowlands festival comes to an end.

In Germany, recurring holiday traffic will mainly provide traffic jams. The crowds are mainly expected south of Munich and in the north around Hamburg and Bremen. A lot of delays is also caused because no fewer than 1250 places on the highway work in our neighboring country.

Austria

In Austria, the bottlenecks will be found this weekend on the A10 between Salzburg and Villach, the A11 at the Karawanktunnel, the A12 from Kufstein to Innsbruck, the A13 towards the Brennerpas and the B179 from Füssen to Nassereith.

Switzerland

As usual, a large file is expected at the Gotthard tunnel in both directions. It is also probably busy on the A2 between Basel and Chiasso. And on the A13 between Chur and Bellinzona it is mainly busy with the San Bernardinotunnel.
