New York (dpa -Afx) – According to circles, the crisis chip group Intel could soon welcome the American state as a shareholder. The Trump government speaks to the company about a possible start, the Bloomberg news agency reported on Thursday, citing the plan. The step should support Intel’s efforts to expand US production.
The idea is a product of the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Intel boss Lip-Bu Tan this week, it said. The United States would pay for the proportion, whereby details would still have to be determined. The planning is also on the move.
At the request of the agency, Intel did not specifically comment on the report. From the White House it was said in a statement at the broadcaster CNBC, without an official announcement, reports on such “hypothetical deals” have to be regarded as speculation.
Investors celebrated the news on the stock exchange. The Intel share jumped up vigorously and went from retail with an increase of 7.4 percent.
Trump had previously called for the Intel boss’s immediate resignation-after an American senator accused the chip manager too much to China. Intel had only launched the 65-year-old in March after months of searching. After the meeting in the White House, Trump then announced that Tan would spend time with government members and present suggestions to him next week. Trump left open what exactly it should be about.
Intel once dominated the semiconductor market, but has been fighting problems for years. Especially in the business with chips for artificial intelligence, the graphics card specialist Nvidia conquered a top position. In addition, Intel is also more under pressure in the traditional business with PC processors and chips for data centers.
Under Trump, the US government had already received a “golden share” when the American steel company US Steel (United States States) was taken over by the Japanese rival Nippon Steel (Nippon Steelsumitomo Metal). This requires the consent of the American President, among other things, for the relocation of jobs from the USA, work closures or large takeover in the country.
