According to the hype: Why did the return of the Gallagher brothers hit such waves? How good are you really still today? And what’s next?
There are comebacks that surprise us, the inspiration that let us breathe – and then there is that from Oasis. The return of Oasis is a mirror of social longings and a symptom for the high nostalgia cell that runs through our presence. Why else does the return of a band that was written off for the majority of its existence from the zeitgeist, which in Germany never had a top ten hit, suddenly crashes through the features, radio stations and social media timelines?
Recommendations of the editorial team
The Songs of Oasis are the soundtrack of an era in which life was easier, the future more open and the threats were more manageable. Perhaps this is exactly the function of pop: to let us believe for a few hours that it was better yesterday – and that can be again tomorrow.
Whether there is a future for Oasis remains open. Concerts with similar nostalgic setlist on the European mainland? Conceivable. Another tour with deep cuts? Unlikely. A new album where nobody wants to hear the last five today? However, if Noel Gallagher, strengthened by the positive experiences of his consistently enjoyable solo albums, brings the songwriting monopoly again, a prohibition sign for Brother Liam, Gem Archer and Andy Bell on his writing room. Hadn’t he announced that he would like to take a pure rock album next after Council Skies? And weren’t his solosongs like “Easy Now”, “Lock All the Doors” and “Everybody’s on the Run” anyway written for the little brother? We will see and hear.
