SortIon (Switzerland), 13 Aug. (askanews) – Mission accomplished: the Swiss pilot Raphael Domjan beat the altitude record with an electric sun -energy plane, reaching 9,521 meters.
On board Solarstratos he made the historical flight that lasted five hours and nine minutes Starting from Zion airport, in southwestern Switzerland and exploiting the thermal currents of hot air. So he managed to overcome the record that had resisted for 15 years.
Solarstratos is a monoelic plane made of carbon fiber to guarantee lightness and resistance. It is 9.6 meters long and its huge wing of 24.8 meters houses 22 square meters of high -tech solar panels that cover the wings, allowing you to fly at low speed. In fact, the plane can take off, from 50 kilometers per hour up and its maximum speed is 140 km/h, while the cruise one is about 80 km/h.
