World champion becomes an assistant coach at the U21 national team

Hermann Gerland ended his coaching career. A world champion fills the gap in the U21 national team.
The DFB has clarified an important personnel in the U21 coaching staff: Shkodran Mustafi will in future work as an assistant coach on the side of chief coach Antonio di Salvo. The former international follows Hermann Gerland, who ended his coaching career.
As the association announced, Mustafi will take on its new role at the beginning of the month. Already on September 5, the duel against Albania is the first game of the newly formed selection. Four days later, the European Championship qualification against Latvia starts in Rostock.
The 33-year-old was already working at the DFB. Since July 2024 he supported Marc-Patrick championship in the German U17 coaching team. Now the former central defender, who played for FC Arsenal and FC Valencia, is taking on a new task in the youth area. Mustafi won the World Cup title with the A-National team in 2014.
