Tesla apparently thinks about a more compact version of his cyber truck. The electric pickup, which was once announced as a revolutionary, has so far proven itself as an economic failure.
• Cybertruck flops tremendously
• Small cyberruck for everyday life
• So far no product approval
Cybertruck remains behind expectations
Tesla originally announced between 250,000 and 500,000 units of the cyber truck per year. In fact, only 11,000 vehicles were sold in the first half of 2025, as COX Automotive data show. According to Electrek, Tesla is currently selling the cybertruck with a rate of around 20,000 units annually. This corresponds to about ten percent of the forecast capacity. According to a report by Business Insider, production in the Gigafactory Texas was reduced, employees are said to have been switched to Model Y-Line.
In addition to the low demand, there are further obstacles: the cybertruck is not suitable for all markets with its massive construction, the futuristic shape and the high weight. In Europe and China, Tesla’s greatest sales markets away from the United States in particular, it has so far lacked street approval, which means a significant disadvantage for international scaling.
Tesla in the design workshop
Lars Moravy, Tesla’s Vice President of Vehicle Technology, recently indicated in an interview at an event of Tesla owners and investors in California, which was broadcast on short message service X, that had already been thought about a smaller pickup. Various options are currently being checked in the design studio. It is still unclear whether this is a reduced version of the cyber truck or a completely pickup truck.
The goal could be to create a vehicle that better suits urban mobility and autonomy scenarios. According to Moravy, the use in the context of future robotaxi strategies plays a role: “I think in the future, when more and more robotaxis are coming into the world, we will look at these options and think about whether this type of service is not only useful for humans,” he said.
Return to the origin?
A compact pickup truck would again pursue Tesla’s original vision: an affordable, internationally usable electric vehicle for the mass market. According to the online magazine Auto Motor and Sport, such a model could not only be more suitable for everyday use and cheaper, but also become successful in markets in which the cybertruck failed.
However, many questions are still open. So far, Tesla has not published a product approval or specific schedule. Technical details and the possible pricing also remain unclear. Analysts also warn that a cheaper vehicle with a lower margin could continue to burden profitability. A topic that Tesla has brought in more often in the past. As long as no official details are known, the project remains one thing above all: a hope with a question mark.
