The municipality of De Wolden is going to take care of fifty Ukrainian refugees in Veeningen. In August the first residents will be given a place in the group accommodation behind Manege Zuidwolde.

It has been agreed with the owner of the building that the daycare will run until March 2027. According to De Wolden, fifty refugees are not coming at once, but people are added step by step.

The municipality will guide all residents with a team that has been created for this. There will also be supervision in the evenings and weekends, De Wolden reports.

Local residents have already made their worries known about the shelter in their neighborhood. They feared nuisance, also because of the plan to compensate for labor migrants at the same place in the future.

The latter plan is completely independent of the reception of Ukrainians, a municipal spokesperson reports. “The housing for labor migrants currently has no further developments.”

The riding school itself was not in use for a while and had to be refurbished. Many horse sports enthusiasts used it and were afraid that they lost their place to practice in the winter. The place has since been renovated.
