It is summer recess in The Hague. During this period between the fall of the cabinet and the start of a new election campaign, we invite writers, scientists and thinkers in The Hague to talk about the political time in which we live. Because so much has happened in the past year and everything went so fast, we like to zoom out a bit.
This week that is scientist Léonie de Jonge. She was an associate professor of political science at the University of Groningen. In January 2025 she was appointed professor of right -wing extremism research at the University of Tübingen – in Germany. She leads the IREX research institute there and has a column in De Groene Amsterdammer.
In this episode of Haagse Affairs we discuss what in the past political year tells us about the normalization of the extremely right of ideas, how to investigate the very right – and how that differs in Germany and the Netherlands – and what responsibility there is with science and journalism.
