These are maximum opposites: While Thomas Tumler was almost perfect for sports last season, he had a very complicated time privately.
Thomas Tumler looks back on a sporty successful winter – but privately experienced the Swiss a difficult time. While he was at the top of the podium for the first time in the World Cup and won the silver medal in the giant slalom at the World Cup in Saalbach-Hinterglemm, the 35-year-old had to fight with an emotional low.
In an interview with the “Swiss Illustrated”, the ski racer now makes his separation public. Tumler reports that the marriage-off hit him completely unprepared. His wife told him that she had no more feelings for him. “That came out of nowhere,” said the Swiss.
Tumler and his long-time girlfriend Svenja only said yes in June 2024. They celebrated the wedding in Piedmont together with friends and colleagues from the ski team-including Marco Odermatt, Justin Murisier and the brothers Mauro and Gino Caviezel.
The separation followed only seven months later – in the middle of the season. Tumler openly describes how much he threw him out of the track: “I hid. Sometimes I just lay in bed and cried all day. I tore myself together for the races.”
The physical influence was also noticeable. According to his own statement, the ski racer lost ten kilograms – and even had to get new ski boots because he simply lacked the strength for the old.
According to their own statements, it went uphill again in terms of sport, but the emotional stress remained. Tumler describes particularly impressively a moment after the last World Cup: “I collapsed in the middle of a ski tour and cried out in the snow. I was a happy vice world champion-and then Zack. That was bad.”
In the meantime, however, he took a lot of time to process everything. Today he is much better.
