Wacken Open Air 2025 is no longer the small, cheap metal festival of the early 90s. But as well as, after all, it is now one of the largest and most successful open-air experiences in the world. What once started at DM 12 (about six euros) per ticket is now a major million of the millions with ticket prices of 333 euros for four days of festival.

Prices when wacking: The tickets are particularly expensive

Despite the price increases, the festival was completely sold out this year: 85,000 tickets went over the digital counter in September 2024. In total, ticket sales flushed almost 30 million euros into the organizers’ coffers. There are also income from merchandise, drinks, VIP upgrades and other additional offers. However, the exact profit margin remains unknown – however, a not inconsiderable part should flow to the bands that occur. Industry experts suspect that headliners such as Guns n ‘Roses could receive more than one million euros per appearance.

The price development is regularly discussion theme, especially among fans

The minds heat up every year, especially when the beer price. Since the early 2000s, when a cup still cost three euros (and was already scolding over it), the price has almost doubled: 400 milliliters cost 5.80 euros today. The increased ticket prices are even more important. You have almost doubled since 2015. Although the festival was extended by one day, the price per festival day still rose by about 50 percent. For comparison: General inflation in Germany was around 27 percent in the same period, and average wages rose by around 33 percent. Ticket prices therefore rule out well above the general cost development, as the “NDR” explains with reference to information from the Wacken and Destatis.

A possible reason lies in the increased costs for infrastructure and artists. Especially in 2016 and 2017, after the “mud year” in 2015, the organizers invested a lot of money in the redesign of the so -called “Holy Ground”, ie the main area. In addition, the streaming age has almost completely broken off an important branch of the bands-the sale of physical sound carriers. Concerts and festival appearances have thus become the main source of income, which leads to significantly higher fees. Festival founder Thomas Jensen emphasizes that these fees in particular represent massive stress. Nevertheless, he continues to see the festival as “a week vacation for relatively little money”.

Don’t forget the “additional costs”

But the ticket alone only makes up part of the total editions. Arrival, meals and camping equipment quickly cost a further 250 euros or more – and the prices for beer, food or souvenirs on the site are not even taken into account. Many fans therefore consider whether the visit is still worthwhile-especially if the line-up is not yet known when buying a ticket. In fact, in 2025 many tickets were resold to second platforms under a new price, which may also indicate a certain disappointment. At the same time, many of the metalheads who have traveled are satisfied. Above all, the amount and quality of live music counts for them-and it remains unique in Wacken.
