The far east of Russia, around Kamchatka peninsula, was hit by an earthquake on Wednesday. According to the first measurements, the quake had a force of 8.8, making it one of the heaviest earthquakes in history.

After the quake, Tsunami alerts were issued for Alaska, Hawaii, New Zealand, California, Mexico and Japan, among others. Almost a million people received evacuation advice on the Japanese Pacific coast. In the north of Japan, the water rose half a meter, but no major impact is expected on the coastal areas.

In Hawaii in particular, the warnings caused panic. In Honolulu, among others, people tried to come to higher areas as quickly as possible, which made the traffic stuck.

At the island of Kamchatka, after -shocks were registered with a force of 6.9 after the quake. The port of the Russian city of Severo-Koerilsk would be damaged for a tsunami. Residents of the port city would have been evacuated on time.
