The storks in the Zwin have had a GPS channel for several years. That data now learn that storks are gradually adjusting their food behavior. One of the storks no longer even flew to Southern Europe, but lingers on a mountain of waste in northern France. “Normally young storks fly to southern Europe or Africa,” says Wouter Faveyts of the Zwin. “This really shows how they adapt.”
In 2025, eight young storks were again provided with a transmitter. Four of them grew up in the Zwin Natuur Park, four others at locations elsewhere in Knokke-Heist. This brings the total number of sailed birds since the start of the project at 39. Of these, 17 are currently alive.
The sponsor project will be continued in 2026.
