A call from Schapenboeren in the Hogeberg area in the Texelse Courant immediately yielded fifteen volunteers who were rolling up their sleeves on Monday evening.
“We can wait a long time and talk about it, but that immediately releases a discussion,” says Jan Willem Bakker. “In the meantime, the plant is growing, it spreads and ends up in our country. That is why we now take the cow to the horns.”
Protected status
Jakobskruiskruid, which grows in various places on Texel, is a protected plant species. That means that the species may not just be combated everywhere.
“In the Nature Network Netherlands (NNN) and Natura 2000 sites, the plant may only be combated if this is necessary for the preservation of biodiversity or if the Jacob’s cross herb pose a threat to other protected species,” said Staatsbosbeheer.
