Astonishment prevails around the town hall along Raadhuisplein in Hoogeveen. Tonight a motorist rammed the front door from the building. Why? No idea says the municipality.
Employees have now cleaned up the last rubble residues. There are wooden panels on the site of the front door with which the entrance is closed. “The door is completely disrupted,” says spokesperson Marianne van der Linden.
Whether employees are shocked? “It was at night and nobody was there. So it is not too bad,” says Van der Linden. A number of local residents also say they have received little from it.
Around a quarter to three in the morning, a 42-year-old man from Elim rode against the town hall. The car then flew on fire and the fire brigade managed to extinguish the fire. Not much later the police could pick up the man.
It is still unclear why the driver was run into the building. The police cannot share anything about that at the moment, because investigation is still being done. Van der Linden cannot say anything about whether the man is an acquaintance of the municipality.
Hoogeveners who today have an appointment at the town hall can just go there. Measures have been taken: visitors must enter the building through the back door.
