The retailer Woolworth GmbH is expanding its presence in Germany. The discounter will open five new branches on Thursday. The locations are MainaSchaff, Arnstadt, Garbsen, Saarlouis and Schwäbisch Hall, the company announced on Monday.
With the new openings, the retailer based in Unna increases the number of its stores in Europe to a total of 900. This means that Woolworth achieves “another milestone in its expansion”, according to a message.
Long -term growth destinations are still 5,000 stores in Europe
Long -term goal remains “the brand of 5,000 shops across Europe,” the company affirmed. In the end of April 2024/25, the branch network had already been expanded by 174 locations, and a total of 200 new branches are to be added in the current year. Among other things, the discounter, which is already represented in Germany, Poland, Austria and the Czech Republic, is planning to enter the market in Slovakia for October. He also announced that he wanted to focus more on the textile range.
CEO Roman Heini emphasized that the recent progress against the background of adverse market conditions had been made. “Such successes are currently not a matter of course in inpatient retail. We are growing against the trend, which mainly focuses on the non-food area in the past few weeks and months,” he said in a statement. “The industry is haunted by ever new bad messages, bankruptcies and restructuring determine the news. I am very proud that we are against it and continue our expansion as planned – ambitious, but with a realistic look at the current market situation.”
