In Sudan, the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has announced the formation of a ‘parallel government’. Reuters news agency reports this on Saturday evening. The military leader of the paramilitary group, General Hemedti, must chair that government. Furthermore, the functions of prime minister and regional governors were distributed. The plan was announced in a press conference from Nyala, one of the largest cities in the western Darfur region, which the RSF is partly in control.

The Sudanese government army, led by President Abdel Fattah Burhan, has condemned the idea of an alternative government. The government army promises to continue to fight until it has all parts of Sudan under control. In recent months, the government army has made a profit compared to RS: in the central parts of the country, including around the capital Khartoem, the paramilitary group has been driven out.

Sudan’s government army has been fighting the RSF since 2023. The war is considered one of the greatest humanitarian crises in the world, according to the UN even the largest. More than 150,000 people died in the last two years. About 12 million people also became displaced.
