The municipality of Geldrop-Mierlo has no plans for the time being to adjust the design of the Eindhovenseweg in that municipality. Local residents do insist on this, after a crossing cyclist was driven to death in mid -June. According to them, people there regularly drive like crazy people.

A maximum speed of 50 kilometers per hour applies on the Eindhovenseweg in Geldrop. But not every motorist adheres to that, explains local resident Hans Vermeulen Studio040. “You should actually stand here for an afternoon. Some people drive here 100 kilometers per hour.”

The driver of the car that hit the crossing cyclist around eight in the evening on July 18, also drove far too fast, according to witnesses. “The victim ended up twenty to thirty meters away. Then you know that the motorist was driving faster than 50 kilometers per hour,” says Doris van den Boom. He lives at the intersection where the accident took place and was the first to offer help.

“When my father was almost left, he was scooped,” reports the victim’s son to Studio040. His father was rushed to a hospital in Tilburg, but eventually died of his injuries.

Letter to the municipality
The fatal collision was a reason for local resident Hans Vermeulen to send a letter to the municipality of Geldrop-Mierlo. “I hope that the municipality is taking measures. That they will talk to local residents how we can change this situation.”

A spokeswoman for the municipality says that Geldrop-Mierlo is in contact with the police about the traffic situation. “If there is the signal that road safety is structurally at stake, then we will of course take that signal seriously. At the moment that is not the case.”

The cyclist had to be resuscitated at the scene of the accident:

The spokeswoman explains that the Eindhovenseweg that the road ‘meets the applicable guidelines’. “But that does not mean that no accidents can take place.”

In order to make the point where cyclists and cars cross each other, the pre -sorting compartment to the Hulsterweg – from the Eindhovenweg coming from the center of Geldrop – was removed in 2023.

“Next week a conversation is planned between the municipality and the concerned residents about the road safety of the Eindhovenseweg. We will include the results of it in our considerations,” the municipality says.
