Remco Evenepoel could not finish the Tour de France. Now the cycling professional gave an insight into his soul life.
Remco Evenepoel commented on his end at the Tour de France. The Belgian had already started the tour. As he announced on Instagram on Thursday, he went into the race with a broken rib and a physically exhausted state. “That was definitely not the best combination,” said the 25-year-old. Nevertheless, he didn’t want to give up his goal for which he worked so hard.
In the spring, even after his serious training accident in December, Evenepoel tortured himself to participate in the Tour de France. When the training was possible again, everything went very quickly, he wrote. “It became a constant agitation.” He always felt like he was running after.
Another setback followed immediately before the tour of the tour. Even at the Belgian championships, Evenepoel crashed and contracted a broken rib. “Not the worst, but definitely not ideal,” he commented on the incident.
Despite the injury, the double Olympic champion won the time trial around Caen ahead of Tadej Pogačar-and conquered the white jersey of the best young professional. But in the second week “the price for the effort showed itself.”
An initiating infection tightened the situation and Evenepoel fell back on the last Pyrenees stage and finally gave up. “This day became one of the hardest and most vulnerable moments of my career,” he said. The white jersey then took over the German Florian Lipowitz, which is now third in the overall ranking.
Despite the disappointment, Evenepoel looks back on this year’s tour experience without bitterness. “It takes strength to show that things don’t always run according to your ideas,” he wrote. Even if you want something very much, the body sometimes has different plans. “This moment, as hard as it was, showed that I am a person. With ups and downs,” said Evenepoel.
