US approves the sale of air defense systems to Egypt for $ 5 billion
On Thursday, the US government agreed to the sale of NASAMS air defense systems to Egypt, worth nearly 5 billion dollars. It concerns the same advanced systems that Ukraine uses against Russian air strikes.
According to the Pentagon, the deal strengthens the safety of “an important non-NAVO ally” and Egypt contributes to stability and economic progress in the Middle East. The weapon deal was approved despite earlier concerns about human rights under the regime of President Al-Sisi.
In addition to Israel, Egypt remains one of the biggest recipients of American military support. Since his return to the White House at the beginning of this year, President Donald Trump has suspended almost all foreign aid – with the exception of these two allies.
