HB Ludwigsburg is the measure of things in German women’s handball. However, the association has now become financial difficulties.

The repeated German women’s handball champion HB Ludwigsburg faces an uncertain future. HB Ludwigsburg GmbH & Co. KG, under whose roof the professional department of the best German team is operated, has submitted an application to open insolvency proceedings at the responsible district court. The club’s game continues continued unchanged. This was announced by the association on Tuesday evening.

The district court of Ludwigsburg appointed Holger Leichtle from the Görg law firm as a provisional insolvency administrator. Together with the management, he is currently examining renovation options for the traditional Bundesliga club. “The economic situation is tense, but the season preparation is on schedule. Our goal is to create the prerequisites for continuing the Ludwigsburg handball location,” said Leichtle.

In a press release, HB Managing Director Sebastian Götz names the overall economy and the failure of the short-term promising sponsorship negotiations as a trigger for the bankruptcy application. “In the past few weeks we have been in very promising negotiations, the sudden cancellation of which took us the economic basis,” said Götz.

The Ludwigsburg women have been the measure of things in German women’s handball in recent years. The club, which was acting as SG BBM Bietigheim by summer 2024, won four championship titles in a row since 2022, and this year also achieved success in the DHB Cup and in the DHB supercup. “Structured conversations with creditors, sponsors and associations are currently underway to develop sustainable perspectives for the continued existence of the club together with the provisional insolvency administrator,” said the association.

“Our team stands for sporting excellence and a clear value keeping – on and off the field. We very much hope that this commitment will continue to have an effect in the future,” said CEO Christian Köhle.
