The Spanish football players have qualified for the first time for the final of the European Championship. In the semi -final battle in Zurich, the reigning world champion settled in the extension with Germany. Midfield star Aitana Bonmatí surprised goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger with a shot in the short corner: 1-0.
Spain will compete against England on Sunday in the final in Basel, of which Sarina Wiegman IS national coach. The defending champion defeated Italy on Tuesday, even after extension.
Germany, record holder with eight European titles, won the European Championship for the last time in 2013. It was the first time that Spain managed to win from Germany. The previous seven encounters yielded four victories for the German women and three duels ended undecided.
Spain had by far the most ball possession before the break and also had the best options. Berger boxed the ball in the 21st minute after a hard shot by Esther González. In the injury time of the first half, the striker was again close to a goal. Berger saved well again.
The game was more balanced after the break. Klara Bühl, the most dangerous player in Germany, tested the Spanish goalkeeper Cata Coll in the 64th minute with a shot in the short corner. Coll made sure that Germany did not decide the game within the regular playing time. She first tapped a shot of direction under the bar and then held Carlotta Wamser with a salvation on the line of scoring.
A penalty shovel series seemed next. It was precisely the outstanding Berger that went wrong in the 113rd minute by being passed in the short corner. The keeper probably counted on a pass for the goal.
