According to Ann-Katrin Berger, her grandfather only wanted to travel to Switzerland for a possible final. But apparently the 92-year-old didn’t want to wait that long.

Actually, he wanted to come to the final-but Ann-Katrin Berger’s grandfather is suddenly there at the European Championship semi-final of the German footballers against Spain. Herbert, 92 years old, took a seat in the DFB jersey with number 92 on the chest in the front row of the Zurich Letzigrund-in the middle of the members of the national goalkeeper.

In the course of the tournament, Berger had spoken several times about her grandpa. Before the K.O. phase, she explained: “My motivation is that he was coming to the final. He said quarter-finals and semi-finals are not worth it. I tried to persuade him, but he is a hard nut.” But that is exactly what she has succeeded.

After the dramatic quarter -final victory in the penalty shootout against France (6: 5 ne), Berger dedicated her success to her grandfather. “Grandpa, that was for you,” she called into the camera – surrounded by cheering teammates.

Herbert in St. Gallen was already in the stadium in the first group game against Poland (2-0). At that time, Berger said with a smile that her grandpa “really put on a jersey”. The 92-year-old is a “very strict but lovable man”, who usually simply expresses his evaluation up or down with a thumb. After the opening game it was a thumb up – “and that means something, that doesn’t exist so often.”

Berger is now also hoping for a thumbs up against world champion Spain.
