Groenewegen did not see his efforts of recent times being rewarded in a sprint victory. “We work hard for it and you are also months from home for the big goal: to win here. It seemed that it was good enough. I was a bit sick in the beginning, but the last sprints wasn’t. I was not in the position to sprint.”

For the 32-year-old cyclist, his position was also not in the final kilometer. Because of a roundabout he had to hold back and then all kinds of riders fell. “Everything that was around spot was ready. I was a bit far there too.”
