Never before has the financial incentive for an EM title in German women’s football as high as now. A finals would bring a lot of money from every player.
The DFB women’s European Championship semi-final is pending. This Wednesday evening, the German national team in Zurich will meet World Champion Spain. Also there is Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. “We are extremely pleased that these sizes from football are reporting that they will perceive us and that politicians now even come to us at times and want to support us,” said national coach Christian Wück before the game.
In addition to the prominent visit and the possible sporting success, there is also a financial incentive for the DFB women. Because a finals would import a proud summer: 90,000 euros gets every player for reaching the final.
That is the triple sum compared to the European Championship from three years ago. At that time, the players had received 30,000 euros.
Each player receives 120,000 euros for an European Championship victory on July 27. That is twice as much as at the previous European Championship 2022. DFB President Bernd Neuendorf emphasized the strategic importance of the decision before the European Championship. “The development of women’s football at all levels enjoys the highest priority at the DFB. We need a sustainable development of the structures and conditions. And we also need more performance incentives in women’s football.”
Those benefits used to be completely different in the past: at the first European Championship title win of the women in 1989, the German national team received a 41-part coffee service from Villeroy & Boch. At that time, the players were still considered amateurs and there was no financial bonus.
A lot has happened in women’s football since then. In 2017 in the Netherlands, each player would have been rewarded by the DFB with 37,500 euros. Four years earlier, the German women were able to look forward to 22,500 euros at the last European Championship triumph. In 2009 in Finland it was still 12,000 euros. In 2005 in England, each DFB player received 10,000 euros.
