FC Bayern receives a severe setback in the cracker against PSG

The women of FC Bayern suffered a severe setback at their “milestone” in the Allianz Arena.

The German champions lost in the quarter-finals of the Champions League against Paris St. Germain 1: 2 (0: 1).

The third participation in the semi-finals will be difficult before the second leg in Paris’s Prinzenpark next week (March 30).

In front of a record home crowd of 13,000 fans – including the Bayern bosses around Oliver Kahn and Herbert Hainer, coach Julian Nagelsmann and national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg – PSG took the lead through Marie-Antoinette Katoto (19th).

The striker also made it 2-0 (71st). Goalkeeper Janina Leitzig looked bad in both goals. Klara Bühl shortened with a free kick (84th).

No impact at FC Bayern

The Bavarians, who are still in the running in the league and cup, lacked the penetrating power in their historic arena premiere for a long time. All in all, coach Jens Scheuer’s team acted cautiously in the living room of Robert Lewandowski and Co. and initially not efficiently with the chances. PSG seemed more mellow.

Five years ago, Bayern had already failed in the quarter-finals against PSG. The Munich women had reached the semi-finals of the premier class in 2019 and 2021.

Before the game, CEO Kahn spoke of a “milestone” for the Bayern women, national player Linda Dallmann of a “childhood dream”. The euphoria was correspondingly high in the run-up – and Bayern got off to a good start. Bühl had the best chance (13th).

But the cold shower followed promptly. After a corner from ex-Munich Sara Däbritz, Katoto coldly exploited Leitzig’s insecurity and the ensuing confusion.

FC Bayern keeps semi-final hope alive

The Munich women showed effect. PSG took over most of the action, but suffered a setback just before the break: Däbritz, who injured her head, had to leave.

In the second half, the hosts initially found it difficult to build up pressure in front of the unfamiliar crowd – with two exceptions: Substitute Sydney Lohmann caused danger with a shot at the outside of the post (65′). Shortly thereafter, Bühl – an asset – failed to goalkeeper Barbara Votikova.

PSG was much more efficient. After another mistake by Leitzig, Katoto raised with a header. Bayern didn’t give up. Lohmann missed the post (78th), then Bühl scored. So the semi-final hope lives on.
