In the summer, holiday plans may change rapidly, but fortunately food can be kept for unexpected expenses. Here are tips.
The tomato tastes better if you eat it at room temperature, but it stays better in the refrigerator. Inka Soveri
- When you reduce food loss, you can save a significant amount of money.
- A family of four can save up to € 500 a year by reducing food waste.
- We listed six things to get started.
Did you just come from a cottage trip and found carrots that germinated in your fridge and potatoes cooked last week? In the summer, plans can change and food will stay in the cupboards for a longer period of time.
However, food can be preserved for unexpected expenses and avoid food waste in simple ways.
HSY, the Helsinki Region Environmental Services, says in its announcement, how to keep summer delicacies longer and save on trade bills in the summer.
In order not to occur, it is now allowed to put tomatoes in the fridge, even though it doesn’t do good for their taste.
– If you find that bio -waste is filled with contaminated food, especially in the summer, it’s time to do something about it. Many also throw food away from everything, although it could be well avoided. As summer surprises and plans change, it is good to check the kitchen routines, says HSY’s environmental expert Iiris Tanner in the bulletin.
If you don’t have to throw away food, it also saves money.
The average value of food loss is EUR 125 per person per year. Of course, the amount of euro can be multiple or smaller depending on your own loss of waste. For a family of four, this would already do € 500 a year.
When you go home for a longer period of time, be sure to make sure that the food will not be spoiled. Eve Paljakka
This will allow me to stay in the summer too:
1. Enjoy or preserve immediately
Berries or other fresh products purchased from the market are at their best enjoyable. Foods are spoiled faster in the summer due to heat and humidity.
2. Store agile
When food is left over, store the food in a transparent container or already on a plate. The previous day’s food should be eaten when they are easily found and attractive.
3. Store in the dark and cool
Keep the food out of direct sunshine and preferably also protected from other heat. Cold bags are also good equipment for a shopping trip.
4. Store in the refrigerator
Most of the foods can stay cool longer. For example, the taste of tomatoes may suffer from cold storage, but in a cool place they can stay much longer.
5. From freezing
Most of the food can be frozen either as such or cooked. Write a list of foods you freeze and mark the freezing boxes to make the food more easily used in frost. When returning from your vacation, it is also good to keep the freezer emptying days, so you may not have to go to the store right away.
6. Cook the loss of food
Sometimes the reason for cooking can be that the raw material lasts longer. It is still possible to rescue a box of softened peaches by boiling jam, gingerbread or making baking baking.
The HSY announcement recalls that if there is any loss, there is a place in bio -waste. In bio -waste, food losses and energy recovery.
