The racist hostility against Jess Carter is now calling Sarina Wiegman on the scene. The 55-year-old showed clear edge.

England’s national coach Sarina Wiegman condemned the racist insults against her player Jess Carter with clear words shortly before the European Championship semi-final. “It is really sad that we have to deal with something like this. It is ridiculous and disgusting,” said Wiegman before the game on Tuesday evening in Geneva against Italy (from 9 p.m. in the live ticker at T-online).

Carter, the fiancé of the German goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger, had previously made public that she had been insulted on the Internet several times since the beginning of the European Championship. To protect herself, she wants to withdraw from social media.

Wiegman said it was a difficult situation. Carter wants to leave out the experience – but it was important to the player and her colleagues to talk about the topic. The team is together. “We are ready to deliver. It is ready to deliver,” said Wiegman.

Carter also received support from teammate Georgia Stanway. She said, who is external insults, was not a fan. “They don’t deserve to be called fans,” said FC Bayern’s player.

The World Association FIFA also took a position. President Gianni Infantino wrote on Instagram that you stand behind Carter and “behind every player and everyone who suffered from racist insults”.

The English Football Association announced that it would cooperate with the police to determine the authors of the hate comments. Infantino emphasized that FIFA offers her “support with all other necessary measures”. “Data will also be passed on so that suitable measures can be taken against the perpetrators.”

As a consequence of the incident, the English players have again decided to forego the previous sign against racism – the kneeling before the kick -off. Stanway said the gesture may have been repeated too often. Something else has to happen. Due to the waiver, the team now wants to stimulate discussions.
