The American Scottie Scheffler won the 153rd British Open. The number 1 of the golf world rankings secured Claret Jug for the first time with a masterpiece on the green of the Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland.

With 267 strokes after four rounds, he gave the competition no chance. His compatriots Harris English (271) and Chris Gotterup (272) followed in the ranks two and three.

For the 29-year-old it is the fourth major triumph. Scheffler had already won the Masters this year the PGA Championship and 2022 and 2024. The American, whom an interim double bogey could not disturb, was visibly touched at the award ceremony.

McIlroy among the top 10

Superstar Rory McIlroy landed in his northern Irish homeland on the divided 7th place – as well as defending champion and Tokyo Olympic champion Xander Schauffele from the USA. McIlroy had triumphed at the Masters in April and has already won all four major tournaments.

After that, the 36-year-old was neither able to build on the success with the PGA Championship nor at the US Open. The 2014 British Open winner even took a short forced break before reporting back. In Portrush he was celebrated loudly by the fans with “Rory” response choirs.

German professional Schmid in 69th place

The German golf professional Matti Schmid from Regensburg landed in 69th place with 292 strokes. The 27-year-old had secured the ticket with his 17th place at the Scottish Open. The Munich Stefan Jäger, who has been playing and lives in the USA for a long time, had missed the cut at his premiere.
