A tragic incident overshadowed the Trumer triathlon in Austria. A 62-year-old participant from Switzerland died during the Aquabike competition. As race director Josef Gruber announced to the German Press Agency, the man apparently suffered a heart attack while swimming.
The emergency occurred in the first part of the race in Lake Obertrum. A lifeboat immediately intervened and took up the athlete. “Attempted resusions started there,” said Gruber. But the measures were unsuccessful.
The Aquabike competition in which the man took part consisted of 1.9 kilometers swimming and 90 kilometers of cycling. A total of 50 athletes started in this discipline. The event is part of a multi-day triathlon event with a total of eight competitions.
According to Gruber, the 62-year-old was a very fit athlete, which was evidenced by his previous successes in this discipline.
