Twice gold: The German open water swimmer also won over five kilometers at the World Cup in Singapore.

Florian Wellbrock continued his golden comeback after the Olympic debacle at the swimming World Cup in Singapore. Two days after his triumph over ten kilometers, the Tokyo Olympic champion also won over half a distance in the second open-air water race. The 27-year-old from Magdeburg struck again in front of the island of Sentosa in 57: 26.4 minutes in front of Italy’s serial European champion Gregorio Paltrinieri and secured his eight World Cup gold in 57: 26.4 minutes.

Bronze went to the Frenchman Marc-Antoine Olivier. The Olympic second Oliver Klemet, who swam a tenth of precious metal on Wednesday, landed ninth with 15.8 seconds behind ninth. “It was really hard today,” said Wellbrock, “a day break after the ten kilometers was not enough to relax. So everyone was so tired.”

Wellbrock initially sat on the Palawan Beach on the feet of the furio -launched Hungarian Olympic shade David Betlehem. Klemet had problems keeping the connection early, but fought his way back to the top. In the second round, Wellbrock took the lead, which he continuously expanded.

Previously, Celine Rieder had just missed the podium in the women’s race. The vice-European champion over 1500 m freestyle finished fifth, and the 24-year-old from Neckarsulm was only 5.2 seconds too bronze. Gold again won the Australian Olympic second Moesha Johnson, who trains with Rieder, Wellbrock and Klemet in Magdeburg. According to the German Swimming Association (DSV), the Essener Jeanette Spiwoks did without the start of 15th place over ten kilometers for health reasons.

Wellbrock swum far afterwards at the Olympic Games in Paris at the Olympic Games in Paris. In the pool, he missed the final runs over 800 and 1500 m freestyle as a fellow favorite, in the open water he only ended up in eighth place. Then he took a longer break and returned in old strength at the beginning of the season.
