Especially for the Swedish goalkeeper Jennifer Falk, the grapes were more than sour. Falk took four English penalties, but was one of the two players who couldn’t finish it.

In the group stage, England had won clear figures from the Oranje Leeuwinnen (4-0), but knew it would be a strong opponent in Sweden. Sweden, for example, settled in the group 4-1 with Germany and left an excellent impression. England had already lost from France: 2-1.

The first half was nothing less than a drama for the Wiegman formation. Already after two minutes, Kosovare Asllani opened the score for Sweden and after four minutes it could even have been 2-0 after the defensive shutter of England.

Second thump for Sarina Wiegman and England

It was waiting for the second hits of the Scandinavian women and it fell in the 25th minute. Just like Asllani, Stina Blackstenius remained ice cold when she was allowed to finish. With those hits it remained before half time. Worrying for Wiegman: England opposed it.

In the second half it seemed for a long time that England would fly out without a chance, but just before the end the team hit hard. Lucy Bronze (79th minute) and substitute star Michelle Agyemang (81st minute) ensured that it was still extended.

The assist at both hits came from Chloe Kelly, who came in the 78th minute. Alessia Russo then even had the 3-2 for England on her shoe, but needed too much time.

In the two times fifteen extension was no longer scored, so penalties had to make the decision. In the series, Sweden then got the chance to finish it twice, but thanks to goalkeeper Hannah Hampton and the great points of Sarina Wiegman, it is England that is in the semi -final.

Which country does Sarina Wiegman now meet with England?

And so after the European title in 2017, Wiegman can still go for the hat trick with England with England in 2022. England will face Italy on Tuesday for a place in the final.
